I had written this in a notepad document I had for a while decided to post.
Thoughts on how to make dust a more enjoyable experience
Aside from fixing bugs and frame rate issues that is.
These are just my thoughts and opinions on how to make dust more appealing to the average dust player from the perspective of a veteran solo dust player who has played many multiplayer fps's.
In my opinion the game play in dust is good (didn't say balanced) however the systems behind it a poorly implemented.
Warpoints Get rid of it. There is no real reason for it's existence at all. detailed later in this post are in my opinion better ways to utilize the systems that would use war points.
ISK/LP Problem: The way ISK is currently acquired is kinda dumb and doesn't make sense to anybody. The way it currently is, you join a match win/lose then get an unknown/unpredictable amount of ISK hoping to make a profit. Therefore not allowing players to properly asses the risk and reward of the gear they decide to use. It also doesn't allow ISK/LP to be a motivator to get people wanting to fight for that paycheck. Instead it trains the player base to be as risk adverse as possible. This has help lead to tactics that dust players have grown to hate (redline sniping/tanking, deserters, etc.) Faction warfare does this somewhat better in terms of LP because you get a set minimum win or lose but it could be better.
Solution: Public matches: Instead of joining a match hoping you get paid enough to profit have it where you get paid a set amount that scales with the average MU of all players in the match but would only be paid if you participate in battle in some way (you know like a real contract). Then instead of getting WP for getting kills/assists/hacks etc. you would get ISK directly from that (say 20k per kill, 50k objective hack) and would display on screen and scoreboard in the same manner WP would. It would also be nice to see how much you earned per life on the HUD. This could lead to moments where you push a little harder to pay off your suit before you die.
This could be displayed on the end of match screen in the same way SP is with one bar as "contract payment" and another colored bar as "contract bonus". If players leave before match's end they would not have completed their contract therefore will not get the base rate but will however receive the bonus they've earned.
Faction war: Same as above instead with LP and X amount of LP per Y seconds in match. the extra part is to reward players who stay till the bitter end. Deserters will get nothing.
Warbarge Strikes Problem: They only help the winning team win harder.
Solution: Public matches Anyone would be able to call in a strike in or out of squad, including squad members. Strikes would be called in using ISK EARNED IN BATTLE ONLY including base payment. When a squad leader calls in a strike the cost is divided between its members earning for that match. When a strike is called in by solo/squad member the cost is taken from that individual's earnings. This incentivizes squad play to reduce the individual's profit loss when calling in a strike. The winning team can still use strikes to win harder but it will affect their profit for the match. This also allows the losing team to sacrifice ISK for a chance at an objective.
Faction War: Same as above but with LP with the standing rank affecting the cost for strike. If in squad only squad leader benefits from standing as in (Strike cost - Squad leader standing)/ squad members earnings).
PC: Strikes are called in using CP and can only be called in by terrestrial officers. I know this would be a lot to implement but I think it would make dust much more enjoyable to play for most players. |

- I do not agree with changing anything with the current LP system. It is fine in terms of what you're payed.
- I don't like the idea of my isk being subtracted from my total because squad leader called in a strike. What if I didn't agree with a OB being needed? I lose money because of this.
Meh, to your suggestions. They're not bad but not great imo. Well we might have to agree to disagree on LP because the way I see it the current system incentivizes winning not fighting there is a difference. So when your not winning or know your going to lose the best option is to leave a roll the dice again. My proposal would allow even the losing team to bring back a decent amount of LP if they try. Victory should be important but not the only thing that counts.
On the squad leader strike thing you probably wouldn't be losing much when you consider that squad commands would also increase the amount of ISK gained. squads would in general gain more ISK than a solo player while at the same time be able to call in strike more frequently. If you still don't like it there could be a system in place where before a strike is called in, its members could vote and only the ones who agree would be billed. |

Megaman Trigger wrote:As mercenaries, why should Corporations pay us highly of we can't fulfill our contracts i.e. win matches. Why should they pay more to mercs that lose but try hard when, to the corporation hiring, the win is literally the only thing that matters? The answer is Dust mercenaries are according to lore many many, many times more effective than the average mortal. Basically they can only send dust mercenaries to counter dust mercenaries without incurring massive losses of life and isk. So they should be more than happy that we show up because otherwise loses would be much higher. WE have a monopoly in this war economy. |
